 Being Decisive by Pierluigi Collina

‘Pierluigi Collina is an Italian former football referee. He is widely considered the best referee of his generation, having been named FIFA's "Best Referee of the Year" six consecutive times’ (Wikipedia).

 Making Decisions involves:

  • Recognising and identifying the problem
  • Analysing the problem
  • Developing a list of possible solutions
  • Selecting the best alternative among others
  • Executing the best choice

Making decisions is a very difficult job

Especially when decisions have to be made:

  • Very quickly
  • Under pressure
  • In difficult situations
  • Under public scrutiny

3 Key Ingredients to become a top referee

  • Talent
  • Hardwork
  • Courage

‘It is NOT the will to win that matters because everyone has it.

It is the will to prepare to win that matters and make the difference!

As decision makers, referees must be prepared to:

  • Take on responsibilities
  • Produce results
  • Deal with mistakes

Big decisions Big responsibilities

A good referee must:

  • Know his strengths and weaknesses
  • Know he doesn’t know everything
  • Be open to change (Change is difficult; not changing is fatal)

There are no secrets to success; just work hard, prepare and learn from past mistakes

  • You can’t program success; you can to achieve these successes

Referee must make sure that the game is played according to the rules.

The lord of the rules

  • To know the rules: very easy, due to the small number
  • To know their interpretations: Main goal is “consistency”.
  • To keep himself updated; as rules keep changing

Today football is very high demanding...

  • For players –faster than before as well as for the referees
  • Fatigueà lack of lucidity à make mistake

In every sport, only repeating what you did in your previous campaign

  • Will not guarantee the success the next time
  • To be one step ahead – Winning Advantage
  • An unexpected event always brings trouble
  • Be one step forward and never get yourself surprised

Being successful:  the attention to detail is very important

  • Information about the teams: tactics applied
  • Information about the players
  • Which leg would players prefer?

Results always come from:

  • Organisation
  • Knowledge
  • Motivation
  • Support  (if you want to use them again, it is important to support)

One thing is certain in business:  Sooner or later you are going to make mistakes

Before the match:

  • Be self confident
  • Be prepared / ready to fight
  • Mustn’t think too much of past mistake
  • Move forward
  • Forget mistakes (what doesn’t kill you make you feel stronger)
  • It is important to get back stronger.
  • Courage is important but the best is to do the right thing.
