The Logistics Field: Is it a hot career?
Three major activities were organized for the Operations Management Week. The activities related to publication, student career and competition.
The Journal Editor Workshop was led by Associate Professor Mark Goh of the National University of Singapore. He also gave a career talk on The Logistics Field: Is it a hot career? Mr. James Chin from National Instruments Sdn. Bhd. also gave a career talk on the same topic. A competition was organized for students to participate in relation to service operations improvements.
40 participants attended the Journal Editor Workshop on 11 November 2013. They were treated to the world of publication. It was indeed an engaging and fruitful session. Prof Mark Goh spoke about 1) Academic Rankings; 2) Journal selection for submitting manuscript; 3) Journal Tiering; 4)Tips for publishing; 5) Assessing research impact and 6) Manuscript writing. The career talks by Assoc. Prof. Mark Goh and Mr. James Chin opened up the minds of students to career avenues in logistics. Students are spoilt for choices. Students were also informed about entrepreneurship in logistics. This is the much needed and value-added area in nation building – providing jobs and setting up logistics networks for the globalization of the national economy.

The service operations competition organized by Dr. Nor Hasliza and participated by the students of service operations management course saw some useful and practical improvements to four business outfits in the campus. They are 1. Tuanku Fauziah Museum and Gallery, 2. USM Library, 3. USM Co-operative Bookshop Ltd., and 4. café. Professor Mark Goh also led in the judging of the competition.

Therefore the Operations Management Week has catered to both the research needs of graduate students, and student development and career information needs for undergraduates. The success of this important event is not without the effort of several people in the Operations Management section and general office. I would like to thank our Dean, Professor Fauziah Md Taib, and Dr. Noorliza Karia, Chairperson of Operations Management Section for their encouragement. I particularly wish to thank Dr. Marini Nurbanum, Dr. Nor Hasliza, Dr. Teh Sin Yin and Mr. Soh Keng Lin for their resourcefulness and selfless contribution. My thanks also go to Puan Amra, our Registrar, and her staff for facilitating to bring forth invited speakers. To all participants, thank you.
