2nd USM CEO Talk Series (Meeting with Suppliers)

2nd USM CEO Talk Series (Meeting with Suppliers)

Outcome from the meeting:

1. Need collaboration on material science (specifically, polymer science and fabrication)

  • Three required areas: Material design, lean transformation, and basic materials
  • QDOS is now involved with CREST and would like to collaborate with School of Materials Engineering.

2. Bring HR of Motorola to work with USM in providing non-engineering courses/training for their suppliers.

  • Now they are coaching internal candidates on innovation, marketing, and corporate finance, but need professional training on OB, proper corporate financing, and corporate governance.
  • Suggested School of Management and Graduate School of Business
  • USAINS offers short courses for outsiders and are able to tailor make courses according to the specific needs of the industry.

3. Require a platform for vendors to conduct research, at the same time need to protect their intellectual property.

  • USM R&I indicates that they negotiate with their partners on how to protect an IP.   So far over 100 USM products have been patented.

4. Require a program to improve the company to connect the dots from manufacturer, supplier, and distributor (supply chain management program).

  • Suggested: To provide diagnostic training and monitoring programs that School of Management and Graduate School of Business are capable of providing expertise in

5. Small suppliers lack knowledge workers and therefore require professional consultancy, e.g. knowledge on chemical process from School of Chemical Engineering.

  • SME Assist Cluster USM can provide internship and staff attachment to match and link (e.g., Business Matching Programs and Industry-University Workshops) required knowledge and training and least-cost consultation to companies that need but can’t afford such services.

6. Motorola and its suppliers require project management training in order for certification.

  • USM Manufacturing Engineering Team suggested Graduate++ Program Certification. Now offering Bose Yellow Belt 10-week course.

7. Potential areas for industrial linkage include:

  • Green & Environmental Technology – Green Certification, waste water management, waste management, energy efficiency, and lifecycle assessment (School of Industrial Technology)
  • Energy conservation, bio gas, etc. (School of Housing Building and Planning)
  • Logistics and distribution management research (School of Management)
  • Research partnership and further discussion on funding to solve immediate and long-term industrial-based problems (Research & Innovation)
