The rise of the service economy has spurred an intensified attention on Global Business Services (GBS). GBS , which focuses on process efficiency improvement and cost reduction, has escalate as a key pillar of a digital strategy that helps organizations navigate the Transformative Age. Leveraging on global opportunities, GBS incorporate and integrate multiple functions and business service delivery of higher-value functions such as consulting and business analytics across organizations. It also deploys advanced tools and technology to deliver scalability to the business.

GBS has been identified as one of the focus for Malaysian Economic Transformation Plan and the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) towards its transformation into a high-income, knowledge-based economy. As of 2018, GBS provides more than 100,000 job opportunities in Malaysia with an estimated yearly growth of 10% to 15%. Among the services provided under GBS umbrella are information technology outsourcing (ITO), business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO).

Niche services provided from these three outsources services such as Software R&D and its application, IT consulting, IT infrastructure and IT services, Finance & Accounting (F&A), Human Resource Management (HRM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Market research, Big Data Analytic (BDA) and business intelligence that require highly specialized expertise. GBS as an emerging trend will fundamentally change the way business organisations operate, which in turn means changing the nature of jobs and creating new jobs that require different skill sets.

The programme would provide students with the right skills and attitudes to work cross functionally and have strong stakeholder management skills. The highlights of the programme includes industrial engagement with GBS firms (both in classroom and at the office site), professional presentation with industry players and opportunity to tap into the possibility of internship training. GBS@USM provide a unique avenue for students to explore beyond the traditional ways to be introduced to industrial experience.
