Unit Keusahawanan dan Kepimpinan Lestari (UKKL)

Unit Keusahawanan dan Kepimpinan Lestari (UKKL), also known as Sustainable Leadership and Entrepreneurship Unit was established by School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR). This unit was endorsed by MOHR and officiated by Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Maznah Mazlan on the 26th of May 2011. UKKL serves as a catalyst in promoting and developing the roles of sustainable leadership in education, research and community that covers a variety of disciplines and organizations which will be delivered through professional development programmes. UKKL also play an intrinsic role in promoting the development of entrepreneurial thinking and approaches by challenging the “usual way of doing things”.

UKKL will also serve as an incubator for gathering innovative ideas and practices that will be disseminated through various programmes organized by UKKL. Entrepreneurship and Leadership programmes are tailor-made towards the needs of the interested parties that require consultancy and assistance from UKKL. The programmes cover a broad range of fundamental to more specific subject matters in the area of management, leadership, and entrepreneurship. This unit is a platform for knowledge transfer activities with the purpose to produce knowledgeable and competent leaders as well as entrepreneurs. Among the recommended programmes under UKKL are:

1.    Knowledge Transfer Programmes

  • To provide leadership and entrepreneurship courses to interested parties.
  • To design ‘Leader-in-Residence’ programme, which brings in prominent leaders and corporate executives in UKKL  seminars, workshops and conferences
  • To enhance and equip prospective and nascent entrepreneurs with important entrepreneurial competencies.
  • To engage successful entrepreneurs and prominent leaders for knowledge sharing and networking purposes


2.   Research Activities

  • Expanding the concept of sustainable leadership through related research in theories and leadership practices.
  • Exploring fundamental research in entrepreneurship that could offer local solutions that suit local players.


3.  “Community Outreach” Programmes

  • Seminars on leadership roles in public or private sectors.
  • Seminars on entrepreneurship
  • Consultation for corporate institutions


PROJECTS UNDER UNIT KEUSAHAWANAN DAN KEPIMPINAN LESTARI (UKKL)

No. Collaborations Description of Projects
1. Kolej Komuniti Bayan Baru This programme is designed to offer foundation courses and functional skills in entrepreneurship to nascent women entrepreneurs. Series 1 has been successfully executed in 2011.
2. Koperasi Usahawan Muda Pulau Pinang This programme (titled “Empowering Women through Entrepreneurship”) which is co-organised with Young Entrepreneur Cooperatives Sdn Bhd (KUMUDA), is a part of a worldwide campaign to promote entrepreneurship among youth and women. The panelists for the session are Adrienne Palmer Cornelsen, President & CEO, Insite Interactive (Dallas, TX, USA) and Chair, Global Communication Committee, Entrepreneur’s Organization.
3. SME-University Internship COBLAS programme 2011/2012 (SMECorp Malaysia). This programme is a collaborated effort with SMECorp Malaysia to assist SMEs in enhancing their business performance. In involves the participation of students to engage with the SMEs and expose them to the real life of running and operating a venture.
Series 1 (November 2011 – March 2012):
A group of 16 students participated in this consultancy-based learning and presented their work to a panel of experts from SMECorp, SME Bank, and leading SMEs
Series 2 (October 2012):
Students participated in the SME- University Internship National Competition at PWTC, Kuala Lumpur
Series 3 (October 2012 – February 2013):
Due to the success of the early initiative, the School is again invited to participate in the second cycle of SME-University Internship COBLAs.
4. The Institute for Leadership Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), University Brunei Darussalam    This project is collaboration with The Institute for Leadership Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), University Brunei Darussalam where School of Management has been invited to par take in the delivery of the following modules: (1) Human Resources Management, (2) Knowledge Management and (3) Ethics and Corporate Governance. It is an Executive Development Programme designed for the Senior Government Officers of Brunei.
5. Collaboration with Institut Pembangunan Pengurusan Johor SDN BHD (IPPJ), a subsidiary of Johor Corporation (Jcorp) Seminar on Entrepreneurship and Halal Certification 2012 is organised to create awareness on Halal issues as well as to provide a platform for knowledge sharing and networking among prospective, nascent, and successful entrepreneurs.
6. Persatuan Kebajikan Delima Kasih This programme is designed to offer foundation courses and functional skills in entrepreneurship to single parent. A total of 25 women entrepreneurs participated in this programme. Series 1 has been successfully executed in June 2012.
